From Tisha B’Av to Tu B’Av'

Yiddish Songs of Hope and Love With Rabbi Rosalie Osian

Along with special guests: Rhonda Horwitz-Romano, Sara Schechtman, Jackie Seltzer, and Rabbi Marc.

In the Jewish month of Av there are two Holidays of meaning.  The first Holiday is the 9th of Av, Tisha B’Av, a fast day, which commemorates the destruction of the two temples and other devastations upon the Jewish people.  The second Holiday, the 15th of Av, Tu B’Av, celebrates love and the intentions of finding one’s soulmate. What is the connection between these two Holidays, one of tragedy, and the other of love, just days apart? How does one hold space for both?  One way is through beautiful and powerful Yiddish songs  that are passed down over decades and generations with the depth and capacity to carry a multitude of emotions.  Songs layered in purpose, resilience, memory, tears, laughter, hope and love.

Please join Rabbi Rosalie Osian, with Rhonda Horwitz-Romano, Sara Schechtman & Jackie Seltzer and experience a selection of songs and reflections that mirror the emotional and historical experience of the Jewish people.  From Europe, to die goldene medina (the golden country) of America, these songs continue to be a connection to the times in which they were written, an historical and cultural record of the human condition, and an inspiration for us today. Let’s explore Yiddish songs to help us meaningfully walk through the month of Av in its commemorative and loving aspects. Some songs will be taught, with participatory singing encouraged. Transliterated lyrics will be provided. A knowledge of Yiddish is not necessary.
