In the Jewish month of Av there are two Holidays of meaning.  The first Holiday is the 9^th of Av, Tisha B’Av, a fast day, which commemorates the destruction of the two temples and other devastations upon the Jewish people.  The second Holiday, the 15^th of Av, Tu B’Av, celebrates love and the intentions of finding one’s soulmate. What is the connection between these two Holidays, one of tragedy, and the other of love, just days apart? How does one hold space for both?  One way is through beautiful and powerful Yiddish songs  that are passed down over decades and generations with the depth and capacity to carry a multitude of emotions.  Songs layered in purpose, resilience, memory, tears, laughter, hope and love.

Let’s explore Yiddish songs to help us meaningfully walk through the month of Av in its commemorative and loving aspects. Some songs will be taught, with participatory singing encouraged. Transliterated lyrics will be provided. A knowledge of Yiddish is not necessary.
