Hammer and Pickle: Jewish Humor in the Soviet Union with Sasha Senderovich at Bonai Shalom

Explore the Soviet Jewish experience through the lens of humor by examining short examples from literature and sampling a vast repertoire of Soviet Jewish jokes.Sasha Senderovich is Assistant Professor of Russian Studies and Jewish Studies at the University of Colorado Boulder. He is currently working on his first book, Seekers of Happiness: Cultural Mobility and the Creation of the Soviet Jew. Among his published works is the critical introduction to the English translation of a comic novel by Soviet Yiddish writer Moyshe Kulbak, The Zelmenyaners: A Family Saga (Yale University Press, 2013). Recently, he has published several essays on contemporary literature by a new cohort of American Jewish writers who were born in the Soviet Union; you can read find links to these essays on his website,
