New Building “Placemaking”

59 Placemaking Ideas for the New Building

Thank You for Submitting Your Placemaking Ideas!

On February 25, a multigenerational group of approximately 50 Bonai members gathered together to provide feedback to the Placemaking Sub-Committee (PSC), the Architecture & Design Committee (ADC), and our architectural team (represented by Nate Hawley, Stantec’s Experiential Design expert). The group reviewed and evaluated 59 thoughtful and creative Placemaking ideas -- sourced from fellow congregants over the last 3 months -- and prioritized the ideas that they felt would resonate the most with our Bonai community. All ages participated, and the joint effort produced tremendous feedback for the design team, which is starting to think about ways to incorporate the prioritized ideas into the project.

What ideas excite YOU?!

If you were not able to attend the Placemaking Charrette on February 25, you still have an opportunity to weigh-in. Review the Placemaking Ideas PDF here and then go to the Placemaking Ideas Survey to share your top 5 ideas with us.

The Survey is open through Tuesday, March 12th.

Over the last few weeks, we have been reading in the Book of Exodus that all the Children of Israel participated in the building of the Tabernacle (Mishkan) -- the ancient Israelite precursor of today’s synagogues -- by bringing “gifts” of everything that was needed for the project. As we continue to work together to realize our community’s vision for a new home, it is important that all of us participate in multiple ways to help bring the project to fruition. Sharing your Placemaking ideas is one way to participate; making a meaningful contribution to the Capital Campaign is another.

What is Placemaking?

The vision for the new building is more than a collection of spaces and rooms. It is of a building filled with moments, with features that make it a uniquely Jewish, uniquely Bonai Shalom space. It is of a building that itself acts as an opportunity for moments of inspiration, teaching, connection, and community-building. We call these moments “Placemaking”. These moments do not add square footage to the building, but rather soul and personality. They can be quotes, Judaica, art or sculptural pieces, furniture, stained glass windows, building materials that evoke a particular
feeling, etc. For several months we’ve asked congregation members to submit their Placemaking Ideas and we ended up with a list of 59 creative and thoughtful ideas (More info above).

Why is Placemaking Important?

Placemaking is what will help ensure that the new building is not just a collection of spaces and rooms; but, a soulful, joyful reflection of our community and our collective mission and purpose as a synagogue community.
