On this American Mother's Day, Israel is already in the midst of the very somber Yom Hazikaron, memorial day. This year's commemoration will be like no other in Israel's history as we remember all of the soldiers and civilians who have been killed in wars and terrorsist attacks in the 76 years that there has been a state, including the brutal attack on October 7th. There is not a single person in Israel who does not know someone and every cemetery will be filled with loved ones honoring memories. Sirens sound in the evening and morning and a silence is observed and for the whole day, every radio and TV station plays story after story of the tragic losses. On mother's day, we are of course thinking, among others, of the mothers who have lost their sons and daughters and the mothers of those still held in captivity in Gaza. IAC - Israel American Council is hosting an event in Boulder for Yom HaZikaron tonight at 6.30pm at the JCC. DETAILS HERE We hope you can attend and support the Israelis in our community.
There is a very abrupt shift from memory to celebration as tomorrow night Yom Hazikaron ends and Yom Ha'Atzmaut (Independance Day) begins. There is not much of a mood for celebration, but in spite of all the pain, loss and confusion of this time, there is still much to celebrate about Israel's resilience and survival. In Boulder, the community is coming together on Wednesday night at the Boulder Theater for an incredible concert with Achinoam Nini, also know as “Noa.” Information and tickets available here. We hope to see you there.
May the memories of all whose lives have been lost in this war and in all the wars be for a blessing, may the 132 hostages be freed and may we see an end to war in our life time as the prophets dream. Blessings, Rabbi Marc
